How Self-Cleaning Surgical Suction Works: ChicagoTip™ Mechanism Explained

A self-cleaning suction tip is designed to manage one of the most common mechanical problems in surgical suction: obstruction of the suction pathway. ChicagoTip™ combines a suction lumen with an integrated clearing mechanism so the clinician does not need a separate cleaning instrument to restore flow.
Step 1: suction functions normally
During normal use, ChicagoTip functions as a surgical suction device. The Frazier-style version provides a narrow, precise suction profile and is offered in multiple French sizes. The design is intended to clog less often than a conventional suction tip during use.
Step 2: an obstruction is recognized
If blood, tissue, bone debris or other material begins to obstruct the lumen, suction performance can decrease. With a conventional device, that may lead to disconnecting, manually clearing or exchanging the suction tip.
Step 3: the integrated stylet clears the pathway
ChicagoTip contains a retractable stylet aligned with the suction pathway. The user advances the stylet through the lumen to push or dislodge the obstruction, then retracts it so suction can continue.
Step 4: suction remains connected
The mechanism is designed so the clog-clearing action can be performed while the suction remains connected to the tubing. This is the central difference between an integrated self-cleaning suction and a conventional suction tip that requires a separate troubleshooting step.
